Chevron Island, the Quiet Riverside Pocket Right Next to Surfers Paradise

Chevron Island is what you get when a suburb sits five minutes from Surfers Paradise but refuses to act like it. Wrapped by the Nerang River and linked to Surfers Paradise and Bundall by a handful of bridges, it’s a tight grid of apartment blocks and townhouses with one genuinely useful strip of cafes, restaurants and takeaway along Thomas Drive. Walk across the bridge and you’re in the middle of the Surfers Paradise buzz, walk back and you’re on a quiet residential street with river views. It’s not a destination in its own right so much as a low-key base for people who want the location without the high-rise price tag or the nightly noise.

Who It Suits

Chevron Island suits visitors who want to be close to Surfers Paradise without paying Surfers Paradise prices or dealing with the noise of staying right on the esplanade. All four of the apartment-style stays here are self-contained with full kitchens, which makes the island a practical choice for longer stays, families, or anyone who’d rather cook some meals than eat out every night. It also suits people who like to get around on foot. The walk across the Thomas Drive bridge to Surfers Paradise beach, the shops and the nightlife takes a matter of minutes, not a taxi ride.

It’s less suited to anyone chasing a beachfront balcony or wanting to be in the thick of the action after dark. Chevron Island itself goes quiet in the evenings outside the Thomas Drive strip, and beyond the restaurants there’s not much in the way of shopping or entertainment. If a beachfront room and a livelier night scene right outside the door matter more than value and quiet, Surfers Paradise proper is the better fit.

Is It Worth It?

For visitors after a quiet base near the action, yes. Chevron Island delivers genuine walking access to Surfers Paradise, a handful of solid dining options on your doorstep along Thomas Drive, and self-contained apartments at a more reasonable price than staying directly on the beachfront. The trade-off is that there’s not much to do on the island itself once you’ve eaten, this is a place to sleep, cook and relax, not a destination for a full day out. If you want beachfront views from the balcony or a louder night scene right outside the door, book Surfers Paradise instead. For everyone else looking for a practical, well-located base, Chevron Island is a smart choice.

Uniquely located between the suburbs of Surfers Paradise and Bundall but separated by the waters of the Nerang River, it seems a world away from the buzz of Surfers Paradise and the commercial activity of Bundall. Chevron Island is a small mostly residential area with a cluster of interesting shops, cafes and restaurants at its heart on Thomas Drive.

Things to do on Chevron Island

One of the main attractions of Chevron Island is its walkability and access to the Gold Coast’s major hotspots. Residents can easily walk or cycle across the bridge to reach the world-famous beaches of Surfers Paradise, with its shopping precincts, entertainment venues, and nightlife just a short stroll away. Chevron Island itself is home to a thriving local scene, with Thomas Drive offering an array of dining options, from cozy cafes to fine dining restaurants.

Chevron Island is also close to the Gold Coast Arts Centre (HOTA, Home of the Arts), which is just across the Nerang River. HOTA is a cultural hub, offering art exhibitions, live performances, and an open-air cinema, making it a favourite spot for both locals and tourists. The nearby parks and waterways offer plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities, whether it’s a leisurely walk, a morning jog, or a sunset stroll along the canals.

For those who love being near the water, Chevron Island’s location along the Nerang River makes it ideal for boating enthusiasts, with easy access to marinas and waterfront activities. The suburb’s peaceful streets and close-knit community atmosphere provide a welcome contrast to the busy Surfers Paradise scene.
