Gold Coast Airport (OOL) is a different beast to most Australian airports. It sits right on the state border at Bilinga, what everyone calls Coolangatta, and handles more passengers than its compact footprint suggests is possible. Over 6 million people pass through annually, and on a peak holiday weekend it can feel like all of them have arrived at once. The good news: the layout is simple, the options for getting out are plentiful, and once you know the fastest route to Surfers Paradise or Broadbeach, the airport becomes the least stressful part of your trip. Thankfully, airport transfers are no hassle with several options at hand.

| Airport code | OOL (IATA) / YBCG (ICAO) |
| Also known as | Coolangatta Airport |
| Location | Bilinga, QLD – on the NSW/QLD border, 27 km south of Surfers Paradise |
| Terminal | Single domestic/international terminal |
| Terminal opens | 4:00 am (closes after last flight, usually by 11 pm – no overnight stays) |
| To Surfers Paradise | ~40 mins by car/taxi; ~90 mins by bus + G:Link tram |
| To Broadbeach | ~30 mins by car/taxi; ~60 mins by bus |
| Nearest beach | Bilinga Beach – 100 m from the terminal |
The Terminal: What to Expect
OOL operates a single-level terminal for both domestic and international flights with a layout that makes everything easy to find. Domestic and international zones share the building, separated by the relevant security and customs corridors. When you land, baggage claim is a short walk from the gate; the car rental counters, taxi rank, and bus stops are just outside.
Facilities inside the terminal include cafes and a bar, a newsagency, boutique retail shops, currency exchange, ATMs, baby change facilities, accessible amenities, phone charging stations, and luggage storage. It’s compact but well-organised and if you can’t find something, ask at the information desk near the main entrance, which is hard to miss.
One thing to know: the airport does not allow overnight stays. The last flight typically departs before 11 pm, and the terminal closes shortly after. If you have an early morning flight, accommodation at nearby Coolangatta, Tugun, or Bilinga is the practical solution.
Gold Coast Airport Transfers to Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach and Beyond
This is the question most people have. You’ve landed. Now how do you get to the resort strip without paying a fortune or wasting half the day? There are five realistic options and here’s the honest version of each.
1. Public Bus + G:Link Tram (Budget Option, 50 Cents)
The public transport combination is significantly more attractive than it used to be. As of 2025, Queensland Government flat fares mean all Translink bus and tram trips cost just $0.50 with a go card, thus making this the best-value option in Australia for airport transfers, by a considerable margin.
The route works like this: catch Bus 777 from directly outside the terminal. It runs every 15 minutes from 7 am to 7 pm, seven days a week, stopping at Broadbeach South G:Link station. From there, hop on the G:Link tram north to Surfers Paradise (around 20 minutes further). Total journey time to Surfers Paradise is roughly 90 minutes; to Broadbeach, around 60 minutes.
Bus 760 also departs the airport, heading south to Tweed Heads/Coolangatta central which is useful if you’re staying at the southern end of the Gold Coast.
- Airport to Surfers Paradise: Bus 777 + G:Link – ~90 mins – $0.50 with go card
- Airport to Broadbeach: Bus 777 direct – ~60 mins – $0.50 with go card
- Airport to Tweed/Coolangatta: Bus 760 – ~40 mins – $0.50 with go card
Use Translink’s Journey Planner for exact times and stop information. The bus stop is signposted directly outside arrivals and you can’t miss it. Pick up your go card at the newsagency inside the terminal before you exit.
The catch: buses run 7 am to 7 pm only. If you land outside those hours, the bus isn’t an option. Luggage is fine on the bus and tram, but a large group with heavy bags will find it unwieldy, and, at that point, a shuttle or taxi starts to make more sense.
2. Pre-Booked Shuttle Service (Best for solo travellers)
Con-X-ion operates the main shared door-to-door shuttle service between OOL and hotels throughout the Gold Coast. You’re sharing the vehicle with other passengers heading in a similar direction, so there can be a few stops along the way — but you’ll be dropped at your hotel door, which matters after a long flight with kids in tow.
- Airport to Surfers Paradise: From ~$25 per person (shared shuttle)
- Private transfer options are also available at a higher price point
- Book in advance at con-x-ion.com as walk-in seats can be scarce on busy days
3. Taxi (Reliable, No Planning Required)
Taxis queue at the designated rank outside arrivals with no app required, no pre-booking needed. 13Cabs services the airport. If travelling in a large group, request a Maxi Taxi at the rank (fits up to 11 people).
| Destination | Estimated Fare | Travel Time |
|---|---|---|
| Surfers Paradise | ~$87 | ~40 mins |
| Broadbeach | ~$61 | ~30 mins |
| Tweed Heads | ~$21 | ~15 mins |
| Byron Bay (NSW) | ~$183 | ~80 mins |
Rideshare apps (Uber, DiDi) also operate from the airport just look for the designated rideshare pickup zone, which is separate from the taxi rank.
4. Limousine Transfer (Groups, Business Travellers, Special Occasions)
Limousines are more popular on the Gold Coast than in most Australian cities. For a group of four or more, the per-head cost can come close to a taxi, with significantly more comfort and a driver waiting with your name on a board when you land. My Gold Coast Limo offers luxury sedans from around $85 for a Surfers Paradise transfer and also covers Byron Bay and beyond. Pre-book is essential.
5. Hire Car (Best for Flexibility)
All the major hire car companies operate desks inside the terminal: Avis, Budget, Hertz, Thrifty, Europcar, and Redspot. Collect your car, exit via the airport road, and you’re on the Pacific Motorway (M1) within minutes. It’s a straightforward 27 km drive north to Surfers Paradise. See our Gold Coast car hire guide for a full company comparison and booking tips.
Airport to Brisbane Airport Transfers
If you’re transferring between OOL and Brisbane Airport (BNE), roughly 90 km north, the options are: a pre-booked limousine or private transfer (most convenient), a Con-X-ion shuttle between the two airports, or the train connection via the Gold Coast and South East Queensland rail network. See our full guide to getting between Brisbane and the Gold Coast for details.
Airport Parking
Gold Coast Airport offers both short-stay and long-stay parking on site. Short-stay is connected to the terminal building and suits drop-offs and quick collections. Long-stay parking is a short walk or shuttle ride away and is significantly cheaper for trips of more than a day or two. Booking online in advance locks in a better rate than paying on arrival. Check Gold Coast Airport’s official parking page for current rates and to pre-book.
One local tip worth knowing: if you’re picking someone up and the flight is slightly delayed, the short-stay car park can eat through money quickly. Use the free waiting bay and only drive to the terminal once bags are collected and the passenger is outside.
Airlines and Destinations
OOL handles both domestic and international routes. Domestic services connect the Gold Coast to Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, Cairns, Perth, Hobart, and Newcastle. International routes include Bali (Denpasar), Kuala Lumpur, and several New Zealand destinations including Auckland, Christchurch, Queenstown, and Wellington.
Airlines currently operating from OOL include Jetstar, Qantas, Virgin Australia, Air New Zealand, AirAsia, and Rex.
