Palm Beach

What’s the vibe?

Palm Beach feels different from the Gold Coast’s rowdier beach strips. The 4-kilometre stretch of northeast-facing sand draws locals who want to swim without the crowds and visitors happy to stumble into a world where the café strip matters as much as the water. It’s buzzy enough to feel alive, quiet enough to actually relax. That balance is what people keep coming back for.

Beach conditions and safety

Clean water, consistent patrols, and a strong lifesaving tradition. Palm Beach SLSC was established in 1930, and three surf lifesaving clubs operate across the beach today, covering 13 active patrolling groups. The beach has won Queensland’s cleanest beach award three times. Always swim between the red and yellow flags. Check BeachSafe for current conditions before you go.

Sand erosion from Cyclone Alfred in March 2025 is ongoing, with recovery expected until around 2028. The beach remains fully open and patrolled, but the profile is different from pre-2025 visits. Worth knowing if you have a specific mental image of the shoreline.

What to bring and do

Andy Frizzell Park offers a comfortable green space with toilets. At the southern end, the dog-friendly Rockview Public Park features a beach shower and exercise equipment. While dogs are allowed on-leash at the southern end (from Tower 13 down to Currumbin Creek), and no dogs are allowed in flagged bathing zones during patrol hours.

For surfers

Consistency is modest (3.8 out of 10), but the artificial reef improves conditions and creates rideable waves when natural swell is borderline. Best in winter, particularly June. Shore break can be punchy, but intermediate surfers find enough to work with, especially off the reef section. Not a destination surf spot, but a reliable local option if you’re staying in the area.

The café and dining strip

This is Palm Beach’s strong suit. The café strip is legitimate. The Collective on Nineteenth Avenue is a relaxed multi-vendor dining space with options ranging from Vietnamese to woodfire pizza, and the ocean views are straightforward. Balboa Italian on Palm Beach Avenue does proper Italian in a setting that feels neither pretentious nor casual. Burgster on Nineteenth Avenue is a quality burger spot that locals rate without qualification. Saturday mornings bring a farmers market if you want fresh produce and a slower start to the day.

Getting there

The G:Link light rail Stage 4 extension to Palm Beach was cancelled in September 2025. There is no light rail to Palm Beach and none planned. Your best public transport option is Bus 700, which runs every 10 minutes from Broadbeach South station and takes around 25 minutes. By car, Palm Beach sits at the southern end of the Gold Coast strip, about 35 minutes from Surfers Paradise. Parking is available along the beachfront esplanade and surrounding streets.

Dogs

On-leash permitted at the southern end of Palm Beach (Tower 13 to Currumbin Creek). Dogs are excluded from flagged bathing areas during patrol. Off-leash options exist at Currumbin Creek beach further south.

Palm Beach sits at the quieter end of the Gold Coast’s famous beach strip, close enough to Burleigh Heads to feel connected to the wider food and surf culture, far enough south to maintain its own residential character. Families find it clean, well-kept, and safe with proper amenities. Surfers get a moderate break improved by artificial reef engineering. Dog owners find one of the better dog-friendly beach spots on the Coast. For more ideas while you’re in the area: 100+ things to do on the Gold Coast.
